The Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) has published the sectoral policy for Menopause in the Workplace, a move warmly welcomed by Fórsa.

Head of Fórsa’s Local Government and Local Services and Municipal Employees’ Divisions Richy Carrothers said the union has a deep commitment that the sector fosters a workplace environment that values and respects the well-being and dignity of all employees, and he welcomed the LGMA’s engagement on this pivotal issue.

Richy said the demographic landscape of the workforce is shifting, with women of menopausal age emerging as the fastest-growing group across all sectors of the economy.

“This trend is anticipated to intensify in the backdrop of aging European and global populations. We advised the sector of our extensive research and unceasing efforts by pressing for practical menstruation and menopause workplace policies, with a deliberate focus on accommodations, training, privacy, and equity,” he said.

Fórsa has long advocated that menstruation and menopause are natural biological processes that significantly affect a substantial portion of the workforce.

Richy said that acknowledging and addressing these issues is paramount for creating the conditions for a healthy, inclusive work environment that reflects the modern labour market.

“While important strides are made in this policy, it is important that the local government sector does not play catch-up while striving to be an employer of choice. We will ensure the adherence to the policy and to strive for improvements to order to achieve best practice and the maximum support for workers in the sector,” he said.
